Unusually, for a show that’s billed as a one man show, we didn’t get to see much of the headliner in Kai Tier is Childhead. Colin Cameron opened the show with a set which was the highlight of the evening for me. This was then followed up by a set from Sammy Harrison after which Colin returned to the stage to introduce Kai. In many ways this was more like going to a comedy room than a feature show.
Kai started and ended his set with a song. The rest of his time on stage was spent telling stories about growing up.
The difficulty with this show was its brevity. The entire show ran for forty five minutes and this included the sets from Sammy and Colin. I was left a little startled at the end as it felt so abrupt. It seemed just as we were getting to know Kai he was gone. His stories were sweet and amusing without being uproariously funny, at times straying into pretty standard material. His songs were okay but lacked any real punch.
Kai handled a reasonably vocal crowd quite well and he potentially could be a good story teller with interesting stories to tell. At the moment though this show needs to be both tightened and expanded upon to earn the affection of punters.
