Cult hit of the Melbourne and Adelaide Fringe Festivals, I Heart Racism is definitely set to be a hit during the 2006 Melbourne International Comedy Festival season. Tommy plays the extremely racist Grandpa Broadbent while in complete contrast Dave plays Cameron, his leftwing-hippy-media studies student, forced to live with his Grandpa after being arrested. The fine portrayal of these two characters is one of the outstanding features of the show. The 50 minute show takes you through the different political campaigns to become town mayor with completely opposing policies.

Incorporating a multimedia element to show defiantly enhanced the story line showing us every thing from old Looney Tunes cartoons to the television advertising campaign for Grandpa Broadbent. We were even shown flash backs of Cameron’s life explaining how he ended up at his Grandpa’s in the first place. Even though the audio wasn’t working the night I attended the show, they boys seemed to create the opposite of lip-syncing by talking over their footage, adding to the humour.

There is a fine line between racism and being funny, but these guys always stay on the funny side by breaking character to explain that they are not being racist solely for a laugh with their Brief History of Racism. At the end of the show we are all handed a “Racist people are people too” badge, which summed up evening nicely. You should definitely head down and see this show before it sells out.
