Gabriel’s show is called the gift of the gab, and this is something that Gabriel does indeed have in abundance. Gabriel Rossi is a regular on Champagne Comedy on channel 31, and helps run the Comics Lounge (as he ‘mentioned’ a number of times during the show). The show started on a strange note with what was obviously the theme music being played and then faded down and eventually (after about a minute) a voice over came announcing Gabriel to the stage. Then his mike wouldn’t work.
Gabriel’s style is to point out stereotypes and mine all humour possible from them. His first five minutes averaged about one fuck per sentence (and every one elicited a nervous giggle from the audience), and then settled to about one every five minutes. This is deliberately implanted into his routine as are his gibes at women, Asians, skips, people from Melton/Werribee, the Poms, Italians real estate agents and everyone else he could work into his routines. I was especially amused at his line halfway through the show about not liking people who stereotype (such irony).
He finished the show with a couple of songs about Altona, Werribee and Lalor to the tunes of some popular songs. There was a parody of something by Robbie Williams but I’ve never heard the original so I think I missed the point there. The singing and playing were good but the parodies were becoming a bit stretched by this point.
As you may have guessed, I am not a big fan of this style of comedy (and I think the couple from Queensland sitting next to me would agree). The majority of the audience, however, seemed to enjoy the show and I am sure Gabriel will continue to sell out his remaining three Monday night shows.
