Fox K – I’m telling you for the first time
The title of Fox K’s debut full length festival show “I’m telling you for the first time” is a reference to Jerry Seinfeld’s 1998 tour “I’m telling you for the last time”. Although obviously not yet of Seinfeld’s calibre, like the New York comedian, Fox employs gentle humour formatted in a traditional standup style crowned with some killer jokes which jerk the audience out of the deceptive comfort level he creates.
This show marks a big graduation for Fox who debuted in the MICF last year alongside Sammy J and Michael Connell. Fox brings Michael along this year also, with Michael showing himself ever capable as the warm up guy and (on this on occasion) hilariously incapable as the tech guy.
I saw this show on the first night of it’s run and being the first night it was a little slow to get going at first, but Fox soon warmed to the task with a couple of his best stories providing some real comedic meat to the sandwich. Fox has begun to develop a true command of his relaxed style, delivering the key remarks with just the right energy. Fox also shows the experience to roll with the punches when it comes to audience interjections and tech difficulties. It’s really lovely watching this young comedian spread his wings and develop his material over the length of a full show and although not hitting the mark all the time the laughs are there and plentiful. This show promises to be a great set as it develops and is tightened.
Fox K is one of Melbourne’s most improved young comedians of the last twelve months and he is definitely someone to keep an eye on, not just as this show develops, but in the future.
