2006 Melbourne International Comedy Festival Reviews

Fabulous Adam Richard

Adam Richard is doing a short run in the last part of the Festival and I was at his preview. Of course you walk in to the tones of Judy Garland. His grand voice-over intro sounds like it was recorded by Rove in his ‘radio play’ voice. Adam promises the gayest show at the festival. Possibly the red PVC clad Topping and Butch get that honour, but still it’s a pretty damn gay show.

He begins by cracking jokes about other local comedians, my fave being the comparisons between he and Adam Hills. Then its into his bread and butter shtick, slagging off the big mainstream celebrities, even asking audience members to tell him their favourite stars, which ads a surprise element and shows he has some good improvising skills, especially when an audience member says “Sean Connery”. One of the funniest parts here was when he read out riveting selections of Bec Cartwright’s column from a women’s magazine. Proving he can turn even the most mundane drivel into hilarious, sparkling comedy.

I was surprised when in the middle of the show he opened up a little about his family life as a child and it occurred to me that maybe it might be nice if Adam told us a bit more about this in a show one day. For now it was used merely as background to more celebrity talk and why he is so obsessed with Stockard Channing and his fascinating experiences in LA, when he went over for FOX FM to cover the Oscars. This leads to some rather lengthy drug humour and finally his Cher impression. He says that he was considering naming this year’s show “Bitch – the Musical” and gives his show an all singing, all dancing finale worth the price of your ticket alone, “Silence of the Lambs – the Musical”. Wow, I was impressed! If you love gay, bitchy humour, celebrity goss and musicals, go and catch Fabulous Adam Richard during his short run.
