2006 Melbourne International Comedy Festival Reviews

Eye Candy

Eye Candy is made up of four protagonists, Tom Siegert, Dave Thornton, Troy Kinne and Monty Franklin doing straight sets of stand up.

Dave Thorton. MC’d this particular gig and did so with the natural charm he owns so well. Dave has evolved as a comedian, topping and tailing his routines and filling them out in a way that brought his performance to a new level of professionalism that I’ve not seen in him before. Troy Kinne, another strong young comedian, did his set which, although good, failed to crack open the hearts of the audience or take him to a new level of artistry. Tom Siegert has a commanding characterisation which he uses to deliver his material. On this occasion the characterisation sometimes overwhelmed the humour implicit in the material, with the lack of tone often quashing the subtleties in his material. Monty Franklin had an approach to his performance that was more like a backpacker gig, with the rapid fire delivery of gags giving the audience little time to digest his material.

Of the four comedians, the latter three appeared as though they could benefit from working in some of the less generic rooms in Melbourne. These four are all talented guys, with Dave Thornton being the stand out. What was disappointing was the fact that the audience didn’t see the best they had to offer in a way they are capable of offering it. There was, at times, the feeling that these guys, particularly the last three, were not trusting the audience to allow them to venture in the subtleties of their work, but rather giving the audience what they imagined they wanted, which was just a series of gags. This attitude falls down in comparison to other shows within the context of festival.

That being said, these guys are all talented and should not be abandoned, but rather embraced. They all have the potential to do some really good things as they grow as comedians.
