Demetri is doing two shows this year. One is ‘The Jokes’, that is, his straight sure-fire stand-up and this one, which is more like the show I saw him do in Edinburgh in 2004. A whimsical, journey into his soul, which of course, luckily, contains many jokes. The premise is that he is seeing Dr Parrot to work through his psychological problems and Dr Parrot suggests he does this by exploring five seminal moments from his life. Its easy to get cynical and wonder if he’s just making it all up for laughs, but he has TV footage of his apartment burning down last year and many amusingly embarrassing photos from his childhood. There is also a PowerPoint presentation, puppet show and songs. It was a bit long but it was the show’s debut and he sailed through technical problems, getting extra laughs along the way. If you are interested in seeing a bit more than just ‘The Jokes’, go see Demetri’s show, which has plenty of laughs and also warmth and flights of imagination equal to Leunig.
