This was my first experience of a Danny Bhoy show. I’ve always suspected he was a bit boring and only had packed crowds because girls go to see him cause he’s cute. (Come on now, I’ve heard groups of girls talking about shows their seeing and they do seem to choose to see comedians based on how cute they think they are!).
But I must say I was surprised to discover a relaxed, polished, professional who could get solid laughs improvising with a latecomer before going into his very soundly funny show. No props, powerpoint or sets just a couple of big lighting-effect thistles, which hints not only at his nationality but also the theme of the show, which to my delight was mostly about Scotland. He opened with a local joke about Melbourne’s public transport and moving through religion spoke about the crapness of Scottish food, their National Flower Emblem the thistle (a weed) and their music the scary bagpipes, as well as Scottish lack of sporting achievements (my brain closed over a little at this point as I know nothing about sport, but he was able to bring me back with his storytelling abilities). He also surprised with couple of serious political digs. So if you, like I, have dismissed Danny Bhoy, check him out and take friends, knowing he’s a safe bet for a fun hour of laughs.
