Christina Adams Alive in Madagascar
Christina Adams needs to get away from a dysfunctional ex-boyfriend, she is studying university science and Christina loves animals. This is the premise for Christina Adams festival show “Alive in Madagascar”.
So Christina decides to set off for tropical Madagascar to study the Fossa, which turns out to be a vicious, elusive carnivore that is a sort of cross between a wild cat and a wild dog. There is a saying in Madagascar used to frighten naughty children – “Be good or the Fossa will get you!” As well as the Fossa Christina has to contend with rampant mating crocodiles, stinging malarial mossies, the possibility of catching the Black Plague and the most scary of all, her American team members.
This is Christina’s second Festival show. Last year she won the Newcomers Award for her fabulous show about being a first year teacher, now she is leading us through another jungle. Again some of the funniest moments come from her wonderfully skilled character work. She plays her American companions with gusto, as one of them continues to hit on her and another brags about being a (very) minor child star and they all go completely loopy because of the anti – malaria drug they are taking. Lariam is not available in Australia and this could be because its side effects, listed on the web including: headache, nausea, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, vivid dreams, and visual disturbances [hallucinations], also seizures, depression, and psychosis. Christina says there is a case of someone getting off a murder charge in the US because they were taking this drug.
The show is set out in the manner of a science experiment with methods and conclusions for each day of frustration as they try to catch the wily Fossa. The headings, methods and conclusions as well as photos of her trip are all projected onto a screen and support the show well, often providing extra giggles. Christina is very talented and her show is family friendly, it’s a pity she’s in the same noisy, stuffy ‘lunch room’ in the Town Hall as last year. I thought after winning an award she might’ve been able to perform in a better space. However, this show is definitely worth a trip down into the bowels of the Town Hall. Christina has put together another wonderful comedy show about jumping into the deep end and emerging triumphantly.
