Call Girls

Call Girls is an early (6 pm) show, taking place in the lunch room, which is behind the Lower Town Hall. The room has a problem in that there is a large gap in the top of the rear wall. This allows a lot of noise from outside to filter in and, as the performers were unmiked for the show, obscures a lot of the quieter bits.

The performers, Janelle Koenig and Vanessa Bennett, play the part of two girls working in a call centre (in Australia!). While there are a few scenes based on making calls to people, the majority of the show involves the two girls talking about trying to find love (or sex), and avoiding work as much as possible. We get to hear about how the girls fancy their workmates and are constantly jealous of the other women in the office. Janelle is the constantly dieting girl pining for love, and Vanessa is the (slightly) older one desperate to get a man before her use-by date.

This was quite entertaining and occasionally strangely warped, and I just hope most women don’t talk like this in private! There are a lot of very bitchy moments as they try and emotionally destroy their office colleagues and I got the feeling that the characters didn’t get a lot of sympathy from the audience for their tactics.

Janelle and Vanessa work very well together as they bounce the lines off each other and seem to have settled into their roles well. The writing is good with some very funny jokes, but with most of the script involving creating the character parts. The set consists of two desks with a half-partition between them and some cards/Far Side cartoons on the back wall. The show runs for about forty five minutes.
