Yesterday afternoon I was thinking…’hmmm, I haven’t had a real festival surprise yet, sure I’ve seen some great shows, but I expected Charlie to be great, I expected DOD to be lovely, I expected Stephen K Amos to be hilarious’...then last night I went to see Kent Valentine, fully expecting him to be good. He wasn’t good, he was awesome.
There are shades of Justin Hamilton to Kent’s delivery (with the odd touch of Charlie Pickering) but at this stage I’m prepared to forgive him these derivations on the basis of youth and the fact that he has the funny to back it up. And funny he is. Like his two aforementioned countrymen Kent just delivers a solid hour of really good comedy. He is commanding, owns the stage and endears his audience.
This is a really tightly written show, all about Kent’s search for love, the ridiculous resolution he made to find it and his final thoughts on this resolve. At the start of this show Kent declares himself to be no expert on love and the hilarious exploits he describes back this up. By the end of this show you’ll wanna pick him up and love him yourself. He is charismatic, charming and genuinely very funny. This show is tucked away at the Portland Hotel. Take the three minute walk to get there; it’s more than worth it.
I laughed till I whimpered.
