Adam Hills – Characterful
There’s a reason Adam Hills is so widely loved. He’s really, really good at what he does. And when what you do is make people laugh, and you’re really, really good at it, people tend to like you.
Adam covers everything from plastic surgery to world politics to his Grandma’s hearing problems to carrots in this show, and on this night he even threw in a boisterous version of the “Star Spangled Banner”, sung with the help of two (American) members of the audience. In fact he begins the show by interacting with the audience. Nothing original there. What makes it remarkable when he does it though is that he does it with such genuine ease and charm that it doesn’t seem like a device, as it so often can in these situations. Adam engages with the audience and seems to genuinely want to; he is charming and effusive without the slightest hint of sycophancy.
He moves from this phase of the show into the bulk of the material so seamlessly that it’s difficult to identify the point where he stops just chatting to the audience and starts doing his material proper. And that’s the thing with Adam, he is so practiced at his craft that he can make tightly scripted material seem like a casual chat.
Adam Hills is charming in the best possible way. His effusiveness is underpinned by an innate ability to understand and deliver top calibre comedy. Quite simply, if you want to be guaranteed of seeing a great hour of comedy, see Adam Hills. He’s really, really good at what he does.
