$6.99kg
With one of the most intriguing and cryptic show titles of the festival, $6.99/kg is a showcase for some of Melbourne’s fresh comedic talent (including some Geelong ring ins). Dana Katz, Pete Sharkey, Clare Turner, Kieran Yap and Dean Eizenberg have pooled their talents and resources to present a show of Meat and Potatoes stand up. With a rotating MC roster, each performs about ten minutes of stand up armed with only a microphone and their killer material.
MC duties on the night I attended were handled by Dana Katz. Throughout the night she treated us to material such as bits on being Jewish and an extended tale about her ex boyfriend. She had a great rapport with the audience and came up with some of the most colourful introductions for her fellow comedians.
The first set was performed by Dean Eizenberg with his fairly low key style. He spent a great deal of his set deconstructing it, which came dangerously close to overkill. Fortunately he prevented that happening by presenting it in a consistently entertaining way. He even had the strange duty of handling a heckle that may or may not have been simply an answer to one of his rhetorical questions.
Next to grace the stage was Clare Turner (who also doubled as this evening’s Door Bitch) and she set the tone of her set with a joke of some questionable taste. It wasn’t all rough going as she soon settled into other more sedate material. We were soon to discover that she was only lulling us into a false sense of security, as she ended her set with some rather confronting gear on oral sex.
Pete Sharkey bounded onto the stage next with a lot of hyperactive energy. His energetic performance and solid material kept the punters in belly laughs.
The final set of the night was ten minutes of Kieran Yap. Compared to most of the others he had a rather laid back style which would have made for a nice gentle end to the show if Dana hadn’t returned to the stage to close the show. It’s not like he was too quiet, but he did follow some quite energetic performers.
All the performers in this show are top notch stand up comedians. Each held the audience in rapt attention and kept the laughs rolling. Be sure to catch them now before they become huge and you can’t afford their ticket prices!
