An interview with Sam Simmons

“It’s like David Lynch shaking hands with Elvis at a cocktail party where Jim Henson has spiked the punch.”

Just like this blurb, a performance from Sam Simmons can be a strange and sometimes spooky experience that can defy description.

Sam has recently finished seasons of the show at the Adelaide Fringe (where he won the Best Comedy Newcomer Award) and the Cracker Comedy Festival. Sam took a few moments from his busy schedule to answer a few questions.

This is possibly an impossible question. Is there a theme running through the show at all?

Sultanas, cats, seagulls, grand dads, and Chutney

Are there any Whiz Bang audio-visual treats in the show that you care to discuss?

I have a large book, and a flying can of tuna.

Do you find performing solo preferable to working with others?

No cos its lonely and I am 10% innuit, and innuits need hugs.

I see that you’re doing “The Sunshine Factory Part 2” as well. Do you approach both shows differently?

No because if I got confused I might perform the wrong show on the wrong night and Dave is Irish which is never good.

Can you describe a typical Sam Simmons groupie?

Unpopular

How did the good people of Adelaide respond to the world of Sam?

Weird at first then the right type of people came and we packed it out and won the comedy award. Word of mouth…word of mouth.
