An interview with Danny Alder

Taking you on a mystical journey into the weird and wonderful world of rock music, Danny Alder (with some help from the audience) will attempt to answer the question “can anyone be a rock star?”

To aid him in this challenge, Danny has recruited a band to help him. “I’ve got two people in my band,” explains Danny, “young stand-up Darren Lever on drums and Gillian Alder on keys. Unfortunately I can’t tell you anything on my relationship with Gillian. Brother/Sister? Husband/Wife?. Or both? I’m sure all of us are a little bit part Tasmanian!!”

“There are a few songs in the show which I’ve got co-written and work shopped with people like Gillian, Dan Walmsley and also some words of wisdom and guidance from Eddie Perfect. But there is lots of room for the band to set a mood while I’m talking about silly stuff.”

Although Danny is primarily known for his stand up and impro, he has been dabbling in music for quite a while. “I’ve been in plenty of musical projects that didn’t keep going and I’ve played with Dan Walmsley in the band for Impro Sundae under the name “Dan Syndrome” . Apart from that, our flat is full of drums, guitars, and various musical stuff which I’m forever playing and writing with. My wife and the Neighbours love it and encourage me daily!”

The show involves some audience interaction, but it’s not as scary as it sounds. “This show is a test. A test made up of segments that dissect a rock star in every single way. After every segment, the audience decides if they think I passed. Some nights I might pass and some I might fail. It’s really up to them. I haven’t planned any impro stuff but sometimes I can’t help myself!...quite simply, I’m a 27 year old, skinny, comic from St Kilda who loves rock’n’roll. Is it possible, that I might just, before I turn 28, be able to be a rock star for one night? Or ten?. Who knows? I’m leaving that up to the comedy festival audience!!”
