Evan Jones: Seven True Stories and One Massive Lie
An interview with Evan Jones
Evan Jones says his second Comedy Festival show “Evan Jones: Seven True Stories and One Massive Lie” is “based on lots of weird things that I’ve had happen to me. It’s all based around one period of my life which happened after I had a bit of a mental breakdown…and then I spent…six or seven years living in the Netherlands as an illegal immigrant and then I decided to return to Australia to become a comedian, so it’s about all the things that lead me to becoming the comedian doing the show, and I put one lie in cause I didn’t wanna say it was all true…It’s something I’ve always written about anyway, most of my show is stories about funny things or funny people.”
2005 saw Evan’s Comedy Festival debut show “Half Man , Half Bullshit”. “The first show was like doing my entire degree in three months,” says Evan, “I thought I knew stuff and then I found out there was a whole world I didn’t know about and I was just running from class to class. This year I sort of know what to expect, what to put in it and how it all happens.”
Evan says that the notion of ‘truth being stranger that fiction’ is a strong theme in this show. “Part of the format of the show is that the audience has to guess which is the lie, so they get eight stories, and they vote on what’s true and what’s a lie…so I’m trying to tell the truth as if it’s a lie and I’m trying to tell a lie as if it’s the truth.” The craft of storytelling is also something that Evan embraces. “There are all those people out there who are described as great storytellers, I’d love to move in that direction.”
