2006 Comedy Festival Preview Part 1

Geraldine Hickey in One Week in Paradise

An Interview with Geraldine Hickey

Geraldine says her first solo Comedy Festival show, “Geraldine Hickey in One Week in Paradise” is “about a week that I spent in a mental hospital, in the acute psychiatric unit of the Toowoomba Base Hospital, I spent a week there. This is basically about the time that I spent in there, how I got in there, like the whole thing about I didn’t know I was going there…the people that I met, the friendships that I made…how it affected the way I am today…and”, adds Geraldine, “it’s all funny.”

In many ways Geraldine is tackling some very serious subject matter in this show, but it’s subject matter that the audience are given permission to laugh at. “It’s all real…I think it’s because my approach on it is I know I’m okay and I think it’s funny, therefore it’s okay for you to laugh at it.”

“Everyone can relate to something bad happening to them” she adds, “everyone’s had a bad day and basically my show is just about a bad week that I had.”

Geraldine debuted this show in the 2005 Melbourne Fringe Festival, a process which has taken a lot pressure off her in the lead up to the Melbourne Comedy Festival. “It’s written now, and I’m not like one of the two hundred other people trying to write shows eight weeks before festival,” she says. “I worked out what worked and what didn’t and got to change a few things…and also for the confidence, now I know I’ve got a good show, and I’m just ready to kick it in the dick.”
